DESCRIPTION: Earth Matter NY is an educational 501c3 non profit. The Lavender Field is a part of our Compost Learning Center on Governors Island, NY. The Field serves as a part of our closed loop model. We compost our 550+ lavender plants’ trimmings, pruned as part of regular plant care with help from our volunteers and visitors. The practice of composting illustrates a basic way each of us can assist in nurturing our soil, which nurtures our earth. Lavender sales assist with maintaining our Field which is open always for visitors to enjoy whenever the Island is open. In partnership with Fulton Stall Market, Earth Matter Farm now collects food scraps brought to the market by CSA members and composts them at their composting site on Governor’s Island. Earth Matter is also one of the only sites that has reopened as an NYC Compost Project Drop-Off site, and collects compost from many other sites throughout NYC.
